Accessible Camping: Tips and Resources for Campers with Limited Mobility

Accessible Camping: Tips and Resources for Campers with Limited Mobility

Inaccessible sanitary rooms, unpaved paths, steep stairs and no or too few parking spaces for people with disabilities? For many people with disabilities, everyday tasks often become an obstacle, making a camping trip a long way off.

We want to change that and have picked out a few tips and tricks for you and a selection of the top 5 barrier-free campsites in Austria.

CAMPING ALSO WITH RESTRICTIONS

In many public buildings and campsites, special attention is now paid to making them barrier-free in order to offer everyone a special and relaxed holiday feeling. Wider doors and passageways, lifts and elevators are just the beginning: more and more campsites offer the opportunity to rent mobile homes. These mobile homes are specifically designed for wheelchair users, for example: larger, developed interiors with handrails, ramps and lowered surfaces in the kitchen and bathrooms.

In general, campsites are increasingly focused on providing as many groups of people as possible with an optimal camping feeling and experience. That's why they not only offer activities for families, children or adults such as bike tours, hikes and swimming pools, but also present alternatives for people with disabilities.

ACTIVITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH HANDICAP
  • Workshops and sports programs (gymnastics, sitting football; and for creative people: painting and craft courses)
  • Tours (on barrier-free, paved paths)
  • Carriage rides, shuttle buses and your own handbike
  • Museum visits, sightseeing and shopping tours in cities

Campers and mobile homes are often equipped to be barrier-free or can be specially converted to suit your personal needs. A conversion to hand throttle or brake, expanded interiors with swiveling sinks, lowered kitchen counters, shower chairs, etc. increase your comfort “on the road” and at the parking space.
